The boys are off to school

The boys started school last week. Josiah is in first grade this year...where has the time gone? He loves school and his new teacher Mr. Bateman. He rides the bus and is growing up before my eyes. We are so proud of him! Isaac has started kindergarten this year. He has the same teacher Josiah had last year. We love Mrs. McCormick, she is great with the kids. He will be the class clown!!! He is very young for kindergaten so we hope he adjusts well to it. Mom and Dad have already had some time to ourselves while the kids are off at school. We celebrated our 10 year anniversary by going golfing and out to lunch. We decided against taking a vacation and each got something new. Hint... mine is sparkly.

The house is quiet.....today is the first day of school. Pictures and details of that to come. For now, I am catching up with blogging. We took a trip to Frankenmuth Michigan about three weeks ago. We went camping at the yogi bear, and the main point of the trip was to spend the day with Thomas the Tank Engine. Isaac had such a good time. He really thought he was at the Island of Sodor. We had such a good time just our little family. The campground had an indoor pool. Shade for daddy, sun area for mommy. They both could ride their bikes (without training wheels) down the roads of the campground. We could walk to the downtown area of Frankenmuth. We even shopped for school clothes in Birch Run. So much fun!!

Michigan Adventure

We took a trip to Michigan Adventure back in August. We went to celebrate Grandpa Trap's birthday. The boys had a great time with their cousins, Max and Ross.

It was quite....I couldn't find Isaac.....I looked and looked.....said to Josiah, where is Isaac.....in his room mom sleeping......I don't see him Josiah......he is in his room mom.......Josiah I don't see him, where is he.......sleeping mom.......where is he sleeping?......in his room mom.

This is what happens when you tell Josiah to grab himself a spoon. He was trying to eat with a giant serving spoon. This, just after I was thinking I should set out the bowls and let him serve himself the cereal in the morning.

We headed out to the state park today to take some family pictures. It was very windy, I couldn't control my hair. So most of the pictures of the four of us are not that great. Also, I forgot to take my sunglasses off for half of the pictures. With a little editing some of them are okay. We will try again in the fall.

You'll notice the long pants and sweatshirts. It was very cold and rainy for most of the trip. We went to Mackinaw for the first half of the week and then to Traverse City the rest of the week. We had only one day of sun the entire week. The boys did swim in the lake and the pool a couple of times. Mom's bathing suit only came out once and not for long. We had a great time. We met up with our friends Diane and Doug last week. They live in Virginia and were traveling to the U.P. to visit family. We were taking a trip to Mackinaw for vacation and were able to meet up with them. London and Cyrus are getting so big. It was great to see them. Wish we could see them more often!

Summer Fun

This is the first week of summer vacation. We took the boys camping this past weekend to Yogi Bear. They had a good time swimming and playing on the playground. We found out they are growing up fast, as they played for hours on the playground while we watched from our campsite.
Both Josiah and Isaac started swimming lessons this week. They go 5 days a week for 2weeks, in the morning. First day dan and I were worrying the lessons would scare them from the water. These are serious lessons. Neither of the boys have really swam without life jackets before. The first day they had all the kids take turns swimming the length of the pool. Josiah went in after two nine year old boys who swam the whole length. He tried his best and made it 1/4 of the way. They had him get out and sit along the side of the pool to decide which level he would be at. Isaac came along and got in the pool with help and got out of the pool. He is in the lowest level and Josiah is in the third level. The first day Isaac wore a bubble around his belly and a noodle. He was told to move along the wall with his hands. Problem...he wouldn't move. By the end of the class, he was doing a little better. When I told him we were coming back the next morning, he told me he didn't want to do his lips. I think they wanted him to put his face in the water. "No mom i'm not doing my lips." By day two he was swimming all over with the noodle and bubble. He was waving to us in the bleachers, swimming backwards..not listening to his instructor. Josiah has enjoyed the lessons from day one. He loves the water and got to swim with fins on his feet. I think we found something he really enjoys with swimming.

Kindergarten graduation

Josiah had his kindergarten graduation last week. We couldn't be happier with this past school year for Josiah. He had such a special teacher this year, which really helped him boost his confidence and enjoy making friends this year. He will really miss Mrs. McCormick. He had learned how to read this year, and one night we heard him singing a song in Spanish. When I asked him to repeat it I could hear it was Twinkle, Twinkle little star. We were shocked he sang the entire song to us. It will be an interesting next year to have him gone all day 5 days a week in first grade.

Isaac's Last Day of Pre-school

Josiah had community day at school today. He couldn't stop talking about it when I picked him up from school. Tonight he has decide to become a veteranary when he grows up. So fun to watch him change his interests from day to day. Last week he wanted an incubator for his next birthday. They were hatching chicks in his classroom. He found one in the Tractor Supply catalog. Then when I told him our friend Abby had her baby he casually said, "Oh, she cracked it out." So cute to see how his mind works.

Four Years Ago

Four years ago today, we traveled home with our second son from Guatemala. Hard to believe it has been that long already. Isaac came home at 6 months old. We traveled with Josiah and both grandmothers. Goofy little baby, happy all the time, and boy did he have crazy hair. We usually celebrate with a dinner in his honor on his gotcha day. This year we will have his dinner on Sunday. Isaac will have both sets of granparents and two great-grandmothers here to share in his special day. He has brought so much joy to our lives. He has one infectious smile and people usually tell us he looks like trouble:) We love you Isaac!!

Friday Isaac was star helper in his pre-school class. They had a bike parade. I got to help decorate all the kids bikes and they paraded them down the school hallways and outside on the playground. He enjoyed it so much. He loves school, his friends, and his teachers.

Take a look at all the groceries I bought today at Meijer, for only $7.61. Yes, that is right $7.61. I love a good deal and had to share in my excitement. I recently found out about using coupons (I know, where have I been?). I print them off and match them up to the sales. Dan doesn't share in my coupon excitement so I thought I share it with you all. The best deal from this trip was the hot dogs. Each 10 count pack was only .25 cents. The Ritz crackers were .50 cents. The cereal .80 cents. Capri sun $1.14. Graham crackers and other crackers $1.50 each. I know not very healthy choices in this bunch, but what a deal.

Soccer

Isaac has started playing soccer this year. We are on week #3. Week 1 he was to tired to participate, so he laid in the grass. Afterward, he missed out on the snack, which made him really upset. So week 2 he played and we couldn't keep him off the field. Even when it was his teammates turn, he would run out there. Week 3 he struggled to stay on task out on the field. Picking grass and summersualts was more interesting to him. He did play good, but didn't understand to stay inside the lines and kept running for the woods with the ball. Hopefully, we can work on his skills at home. He does it all smiling from ear-to-ear!

Since Josiah turned 6 in April, I thought it might be time to let him try riding the bus. He has wanted to ride it from the first day of school. So, I thought I would let go a little and let him try it. He did great and enjoys riding with all of his friends.

Last week Nana and Grandpa came home with shells from Florida. So, we put them to use and got the kids each a fish. Isaac was so excited carrying them home from Meijers. He was poking at them in the bag. We got them situated in their new fish bowl and he couldn't wait to show Josiah when he came home from school. On Sunday, I was in another room and heard the shells moving around in the sink. So sure enough I went out to look at what Josiah was doing (Isaac was gone with Dan). The fish were missing out of the fish bowl. So I asked Josiah in a panicked tone what did you do with the fish. He said, "I put them in my hat." He was carrying them around in his new baseball cap. Apperently that is what they do in Cat In The Hat. These poor fish made it until today, when I got the call at work that the fish had died and daddy flushed them down the toilet. So tonight I came home and cleaned out the fish bowl and noticed along with the shells the fish now also had star stickers floating around. I think we need to get a pet that is a little more interactive for the kids.

Thanks to my parent for a great Christmas present, we were able to take the kids to Great Wolf Lodge this week. They had so much fun. It was fun for us to see them enjoy the water. Josiah conquered all the tube rides this year. We enjoyed hanging out just the four of us. It was wonderful!! Thanks mom and dad!

Mom where is my hat?

We are leaving tomorrow to take the kids to Great Wolf Lodge. We are all looking forward to it. So this morning I had the kids cleaning the house for money to buy something small on the trip. They make .50 for vacuuming their rooms and .50 for additional rooms. Anyways, Isaac was vacuuming his room and all of a sudden he is screaming my hat is gone, my hat is gone. So I am thinking there is no way a vacuum can eat up a baseball cap, so I start the search around his room and in the living room. This is his favorite hat ever, and the whole time I am telling him he must have mis-placed it, and he is telling me it is in the vacuum. Finally, he tips the vacuum over and yells to me look mom there it is. Sure enough it was half-way in the vacuum. I thought for sure I would have heard the vacuum make a funny noise so I never looked. Sorry Isaac.

Today we took the boys roller-skating for the first time. They both did great. Josiah enjoyed skating all by himself. It was fun to see them try something new.

5 years ago we were in Guatemala waiting to travel home with our first child, Josiah. Were has the time gone? The first picture is us on his offical gotcha day in Guatemala. This year we had the boys each pick out a small gift for each other this Christmas. They also picked out gifts for grandmas and grandpas. They wrapped them all by themselves, Josiah wrote out who they were to and from, and placed bows on them all. They have been sitting under our tree upstairs for a week now. Just today I came home from running an errand and I noticed through the front window the tree was over on its side resting on the chair. So inside I go to yell and put the tree back up. So now I have to rearrange the gifts under the tree when I notice one is missing. I have searched all over the house and no is fessing up to what happened to it. I have not seen any evidence of the presents contents or wrapping. Of course, this is an edible gift that contains a mess if they do eat it. So I should know if they ate it. Let you all know if I find it.

Oh, by the way this comes just after we went to see santa, to whom they said, "Yes santa we have been good."

Last night we attended a Christmas Party up at Fricanos in Muskegon. Josiah was fasinated by the paino player, Al. He stood and watched him for most of the night. He even got a few lessons from Al. I think we need to get him some lessons. The top picture is prety dark, but if you click on it you see Josiah standing by the guy again.

We had a wonderful family trip to Chicago yesterday. Dan and I took the kids to Michigan City where we boarded the South Shore Line and road the train into downtown Chicago. We walked around downtown and looked at the Christmas decorations. The boys really enjoyed the lego store. They each brought their own wallets to buy a toy. Go figure, Josiah picked hot wheels and Isaac a thomas the train toy. All the way to Chicago to pick out those. We ate dinner at Ed Debevics and the kids enjoyed razzing the waiter there. We had such a good time.

Today Josiah had a family feast at his school. He got to sign up to have mom bring what he wanted. So of course he signed me up to bring p.b. and jelly sandwiches. Only at school they have some kids with peanut allergies, so they were jelly sandwiches. The teacher asked me to make 20 sandwiches. So he came home with many left over. I set them on the table and told them they could eat some jelly sandwiches for dinner. Then I turned around to get them the healthier part of the meal, and this is what I found when I turned back around. They had divided ALL the jelly sandwiches between the two of them. Yuck!

The Mystery Trip

Sunday we took a road trip with the kids and Dan's parents. We called it a mystery trip, because only Dan and I knew where we were taking them. Since the boys love old fashion cars, we found a place in Hickory corners called The Gilmore Car Museum. It was very impressive! They had so many classic cars in very well kept barns. Some of the barns were two-stories with cars in both. They even had a 50's diner, and many places to bring your own lunch and picnic. We went out for dinner at Fricanos in Kalamzoo. It was a fun day.

Tonight we attend the annual Holland Police Reserve Banquet. Dan was given his 5 year service award tonight. It was nice to see him be awarded for the 5 years he has been a reserve, and all the time he puts forth.
I am proud of him for having his full-time job, his reserve job, and

My mom and I took the boys out to the pumpkinfest in Zeeland this week. Josiah loves bunnies, so he was so happy they had some to hold. Both boys took a turn riding on Jake the donkey. Saturday we took them to the parade and Aunt Audri joined us.

Josiah and I went on his class field trip to Post Family Farm today. The weather turned out to be beautiful. He loved the bus ride. In one of the pictures they are tellling a story and Josiah is on the end portraying a bumble bee. Josiah is on the rocks with his lady friends. The one we hear the most about is Shontea. She is the cutie in the middle of the girls. They all got to eat donuts and apple cider. The parents all got to try the donuts as well. They were very good! We all got to pick a pumpkin. The pumpkins we chose were pie baking pumpkins, so we may give that a try...anyone with a good recipe?? We hope you are all having a great start to the fall season.

Race For The Cure 2008

We had a great time at the Race for the cure today. Unfortunately dan's uncle was going to walk in the race but he became ill before the race and was taken by ambulance to Metro hospital in GR. He was admitted overnight after a day of tests. We pray everything looks good and he can be released tomorrow. In the pictures above is Josiah and Nana (dan's mother), and all of the Hill grandkids (minus Tulsa).

Tomorrow is Race for The Cure in Grandville. The weather is suppose to be great for the 5k race. My team consists of 16 adults and 6 kids. We have raised $767.00 this year. Thanks to all who are on my team and all who donated. My grandmother would be proud of everyone on the team!

Another Car Show

This past friday night my mom and I took the boys to a car show. It was a benefit for 2 brothers with MD. The weather was beautiful and the boys had a great time. They even got to sit in two of the cars. Josiah wanted his picture taken at every car. He would pose in front of each car until my mom would snap his picture. She took so many pictures the batteries in the camera died. So we had to pretend. Here are a few of the 48 pictures she took.

We made it through the first day of school for both boys. They are both looking forward to going back. Josiah is even talking about wanting to ride the bus. We will pass a bus on the road and he says, "there goes my bus." So we will see.

Josiah's Big Day

I just dropped Josiah off for his first day of afternoon kindergarten. Did I cry on the way home? My crying came about on Sunday night, when I realized I didn't fill out his transportation form. I got to thinking how do they know if he rides the bus or I take bring him and pick him up. So I looked in his folder and sure enough there was the form to be filled out. We had decided to let him (and me) get used to going everyday to kidergarten first, then we would work on the bus riding. So, I panicked at the thought of him being put on the bus for the ride home with the big kids, when he wasn't expecting that. So today when I brought him I turned in the form to the office and sure enough they had him as riding the bus. So the secretary had to go find the teacher and let her know. We will find out when I go to pick him up if she got the message. This year there is less parent/teacher chat time, and you drop him off at the playground and he is suppose to line up when the bell rings. So no chance for me to let her know. An older kid brings the kids out to the bus before the parent pick up kids so....Dan tried to calm me down by telling me to go sit in the parking lot way early and wait for him. If they put him on the bus go get him off. We will see what happens.

When I dropped him off he did really good. He is supposed to go play on the playground, but wanted to stand by Isaac and I. Then the teacher came out to have them line up, they had to wait for the bus riders. So as they were waiting the worry came across his face. He stood there and then followed the teacher inside. I thought he was going to cry but he didn't. Hopefully, he will have a great day and tomorrow will be easier.

Today was Isaac's first day of pre-school. Mom stayed with him today, so he was happy to be there. He is happy-go-lucky so he will do fine on his own in school.

We spent the day at Uncle Bill's condo. He has a pool, a beach and a boat. The weather was perfect for the last day of summer before school. The kids enjoyed playing with thier cousins Max and Ross.

Last night we had meet the teacher night at Josiah's new school. He seems excited about starting kindergarten. I on the other hand am nervous for him. I worry if he will make new friends, listen to his teacher, excel at learning, and find his way around a new school without mom around. I hope my worry will go away as we get into a routine of things. Please pray for Josiah as he starts kindergarten. Pray that he has an exciting new year, and his mother can let go a little.

Michigan Adventure

Last week we headed to Michigan's Adventure with Dan's family. We celebrated his dad's birthday there. The boys had so much fun. Next year they should be taller and able to ride more rides.

Race for the Cure

Last year I put together a team to participate in the Race for the Cure. We had 19 members on the team and raised $750.00 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation. I put together Team Audrey. This is in memory of my grandmother who passed away from breast cancer in 2005. She was a wonderful women to say the least! I think of her often and wish she were here to see my boys grow and give me advise on raising two boys.

Josiah the pie maker

Tonight Josiah and I made blueberry in the snow dessert. He refers to it as blueberry pie. He couldn't wait to call his Nana and find out if she likes blueberries. She is coming to babysit on Wednesday and will have dessert waiting for her.

This morning the boys and I went to pick blueberries for the first time. My mom came with us. Josiah did a great job and filled his bucket right up. Isaac on the other hand stood there and ate everything he picked. He left saying, "I got a ouchy tummy." He had no berries in his bucket when it came time to weigh them.

Coast Guard Run

Today was the Coast Guard Festival Run. Dan and our friends, Jer and Abby ran the 10K. I ran (mostly jogging and walking) the 5k with our friend Bill. Then the boys and I ran the family fun run. They enjoyed running in a race setting for the first time. Then they went and did the tot trot obstacle course with their cousin Max. Afterward we enjoyed breakfast at the Dee-lite in Grand Haven and some time at the Grand Haven Beach.

My friend Diane and her family are in Holland for a visit. They live in Washington D.C. We are so happy to hang out with them while they are here. Hard to believe London is 9 years old already, and Cyrus is 5. The kids enjoyed having them in town. We took a trip to Tunnel park one day, and this picture is from Crazy Bounce. Tonight I had dinner with some of my high school friends. They bring there kids and we eat at a park and the kids play. So Isaac feels the need to entertain everyone and decides to stick a grape up his nose. He looks at me as if to say ha-ha everyone is laughing at me. Luckily, I could squeeze it out. I am sure all the other mothers are thinking while laughing at him, he better not give my kids any ideas. Isaac has tried things Josiah has never even thought of, swollowing the penny and then there is our trip to Millenium Park. You'll have to ask me about that story in person. Oh Isaac we love you.

We had a great time spending the day with Nana (dan's mom) in Grand Haven. Spread the Music foundation puts on a Family Fun Day for the kids. We played lots of games and won all kinds of cool new stuff. The candy, pop and whistles are the favorites. We love the new shirts they were handing out. Josiah loved the cool car show and Isaac loved the train ride. Mommy and Nana enjoyed the ice cream.

So much fun to be had in a day! Isaac fell asleep at the doorway of our house, it was only 5pm, and we couldn't wake him. He is go, go, go, all day long. As I look at this picture now, I see he also wet his pants. I didn't notice that at the time.

The Wood Chip Weekend

We had a fun weekend camping with our bible study group. The kids enjoyed playing with each other. The guys enjoyed the newspaper, and the girls had a chance to relax. The campground was excellent for the kids we could see them right from our campsite.

Vacation Bible School

The boys started bible school this week. They were both very reluctant about attending. They are in seperate classes and seperate areas altogether. That itself is something new, they always have had each other. Monday I dropped Isaac off first and he cried and clung to me. That is not characteristic of Isaac at all. Then I dropped Josiah off and he tried to cling on, but he stayed and starred at me as I walked away. Then back to peek in on Isaac, where he had stopped crying and was sitting on his teacher's lap. When I picked them up I picked Isaac up first and as we were walking to pick up Josiah, he told me he had fun. So I told him he would be going back tomorrow, and he informed me that "I will cry again tomorrow mommy." So today was day number 2 and we dropped Isaac off first and he was happy to go. No trouble what so ever today. Whew! Mom is enjoying those few hours to herself this week.

We took the train to Chicago with Nana, Jen and cousin Max. The boys had a great time eating breakfast on the train. We took them to the Navy Pier and the Children's Museum.

Hard to believe Isaac has been home for 3 years already. He has brought so much joy and laughter to our family. We are so blessed by him. This is the first picture we saw of Isaac with his foster mother. Isaac came home when he was six months old.
